Dubai Summit Highlights Global Call for Ethical AI Use
Artificial intelligence is an “incredible superpower” that can either uplift humanity or cause serious harm depending on how it is used. Speaking at the Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum at Expo City Dubai, former Google X executive Mo Gawdat urged global leaders to take responsibility for guiding AI ethically. He warned that while AI could soon perform most human tasks better than people, it must be kept out of the hands of bad actors. Gawdat described AI as a “Pandora’s Box” and said its future impact depends on how wisely it is managed today.
He also praised Dubai for showing how technology can improve safety, efficiency, and urban innovation. Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said Dubai serves as a “laboratory of ideas” that thrives on curiosity and learning. The summit brought together leaders from more than 300 cities to explore how AI, sustainability, and smart governance can shape the future of urban life across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Dubai Introduces AI-Powered Virtual ICU to Enhance Critical Care
Dubai Health has launched a groundbreaking pilot project at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, introducing an AI-powered Virtual ICU designed to revolutionize intensive care. The system uses advanced cameras and real-time data analytics to monitor patients’ movements, facial expressions, and skin tone, allowing medical staff to detect early signs of distress and respond immediately. Integrated with Dubai Health’s electronic medical record system, Salama, the technology strengthens patient safety and ensures faster interventions.
The ten-bed pilot is being monitored in collaboration with the National Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., enabling continuous expert oversight and knowledge exchange. Scheduled to go live in December 2025, the Virtual ICU aims to reduce hospital stays, improve survival rates, and enhance decision-making for critical care teams. Dubai’s initiative reflects its growing leadership in digital health innovation and the use of AI to advance medical excellence in the region.
